This was actually part of God’s blessing on mankind. Adam and Eve were given dominion over the entire earth, meaning they were to rule and reign over it on behalf of God who is the ultimate Ruler and King. We don’t really use the word dominion anymore but think of it as an old-fashioned Bible word for having the power and authority to rule over something, such as a kingdom. So, immediately after creating mankind, God tasked us with a unique role, to have dominion over the earth. Well, we’re actually told in the first book of the Bible as part of the creation story. This understanding gives us insight, revelation, and meaning, not only to the definition of this verse, but also to our identity in Christ.
